A NEW party being pushed by federal independent MPs would be like One Nation and split the conservative vote.
The warning from Nationals Senate leader Ron Boswell comes as independent MP Bob Katter refused yesterday to divulge details of the new party, saying only that growing numbers of people in regional areas were fed up with the major parties.
"The first test has failed - surely we've done this before with One Nation where we gave Labor three states," Senator Boswell said yesterday.
Mr Katter, who holds the Queensland seat of Kennedy, has indicated he could join the party, which would fight free-market policies that punish primary producers, if it became a reality.
About 15 community leaders from north Queensland, and several delegates from Brisbane, met in Townsville at the weekend to thrash out plans to establish the new political force.
The party is expected to be based in Queensland and could be ratified at a meeting of delegates in the next two months.
NSW federal independent MP Peter Andren - also said to be gathering a coalition of independent candidates - believes people unhappy with the major parties could deliver 10 to 15 per cent of the vote to a new party.

Boswell
Boswell is a prime example of what's wrong with the Nationals.
The Nationls in Queensland have been responsable for the best government in Australia since WW2. That government was headed by Joe. It had the lowest taxes, free hospitals, built infrastructure and generally ran Queensland efficently. While Joe tolerated the Liberals, he had to they gave him the numbers to govern, he virtually ignored their style of government. Liberal style is demonstrated by the ineffecient, high taxing, state and federal governments they have headed and in some cases sent broke!
The "good economic manager" image they promote, is the hight of hypocrocy. All they do is tax the hell out of the workers, leave big buisness and the rich to do what they like, spend buggar all on essentials, health, education, and infastructure unless it benifets big buisness. Certainly nothing on the environment. In effect, Liberals rob the poor to give to the rich.
Boswell loves them! If the Nats were even a shadow of the party they used to be, they'd disendorce Boswell and his ilk, so fast it'd make your head spin. The nicest thing one can say about the man, is, he looks like a pig!
